EU countries start using Moderna coronavirus vaccine

1 min read
The Commission approved the vaccine on January 6.

Europeans will start getting the Moderna coronavirus jab Thursday, including in Denmark, one of the first EU countries to dispense the jab, according to Danish media.

The vaccine shipments have been arriving in the EU over the past several days. On Wednesday, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called it “good news for the most vulnerable citizens [and] health workers.”

“Vaccination is the lasting solution to the pandemic,” she said on Twitter.

Bulgaria also is rolling out the vaccine Thursday, according to Reuters.

The Commission approved the Moderna vaccine on January 6, making it the second shot to be distributed in the EU after the BioNTech/Pfizer’s jab got the green light in December. The Moderna vaccine is seen as easier to distribute, however, because it doesn’t require the ultra-low freezing temperatures needed for the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine.

The EU has secured 160 million doses of the vaccine. It will receive 10 million by the end of the first quarter of 2021; 35 million by the second quarter; and 35 million by the third quarter. The remaining 80 million will also be distributed in 2021, although Moderna has not said when.
