But many still say the pandemic shows the need for more European cooperation.
Public trust in EU institutions has dropped due to their handling of the coronavirus pandemic and vaccine rollout, according to a new survey released Wednesday.
The report, published by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) think tank, showed that in half of the twelve member countries surveyed, a majority of respondents said they had little confidence in the EU, or that their confidence had deteriorated following events of the past year.
Majorities in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Austria also viewed the European project as “broken.”
Despite such results, a majority of respondents in every country, except for Germany and France, said that the coronavirus pandemic demonstrates the need for more European cooperation. This was still the top response in those two countries, though agreement fell to just below half in each, at 47 percent and 45 percent, respectively.
The most common response overall to the question of how the EU should change after the pandemic was that it needed to develop a unified response to global challenges. This outcome reflects other recent polls.
If the EU fails to do a better job, “it may risk becoming another casualty of Covid-19,” the report’s authors wrote.
They added that “there is no hiding the fact that EU institutions have missed an opportunity to prove their value to European voters during the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Such dissatisfaction did not translate into wishing to leave the bloc for most respondents, however. A majority in almost all countries still backed EU membership. The lone exception was France, where the most popular response was that membership is “neither a good or bad thing.”
Respondents also recorded low confidence in their national governments, with majorities in France, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Portugal, Poland and Hungary judging their national political system as also being “broken.”This article is part of POLITICO’s premium policy service: Pro Health Care.
