UK foreign secretary talks up common climate fight in call with US counterpart.

LONDON — The U.K. and the U.S. hope to pursue a “shared agenda,” with a focus on the fight against climate change, the British foreign ministry said on Wednesday after the first phone call between Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab and his new American counterpart Antony Blinken.

On the call, Raab welcomed Joe Biden’s “commitment to tackling climate change” and his re-engagement with the World Health Organization, a spokesperson for the U.K. Foreign Office said.

The U.K. is hosting the U.N. COP26 climate summit in November as well as the G7 summit in June and has sought to position itself as a key supporter of President Biden’s bid to renew democratic alliances and international cooperation after the turbulence of the Donald Trump years.

Blinken and Raab also discussed “the need to tackle Iranian destabilizing behavior and cooperation to hold China to its international commitments,” as well as “opportunities to work together on a shared agenda, to reinforce democratic values across the world,” the spokesperson said.

U.K. Chancellor Rishi Sunak also had his first call with his new U.S. counterpart, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. Sunak and Yellen both “stressed the central importance of action to tackle climate change,” according to a U.K. Treasury readout, which also highlighted Britain’s push — via its hosting of the G7 — for a “global solution on tax challenges created by digitalization of the economy.”

A U.S. readout of the call said Yellen had “highlighted their shared priorities, including cooperating to end the pandemic and support a strong global recovery, fighting inequality, and forcefully addressing the threat of climate change.”

“They also discussed the need to find multilateral solutions to many of the issues facing the global economy, including addressing the tax challenges of efficiently and equitably taxing the income of multinational firms,” according to the U.S. readout. “The Secretary noted the importance of the longstanding U.S.-UK relationship.”
