Comedian Ray Romano was the titular star on the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, but viewers also fell in love with his onscreen twins, Michael and Geoffrey Barone.

The boys were played by real-life twins Sawyer and Sullivan Sweeten, who played the role for all nine seasons.

Sadly, 10 years after the beloved sitcom wrapped, Sawyer took his own life, devastating both his real-life family and onscreen family.

Here's what happened to the twins America called their own.

Who played the twins in Everybody Loves Raymond?

Brothers Geoffrey and Michael Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond were played by real-life identical twins Sawyer and Sullivan Sweeten.

They were just 16 months old when they were cast in 1996 and played the roles until the final episode in 2005. In total, they appeared in 142 episodes of the show.

Their big sister, Madylin Sweeten, also starred in the sitcom as their onscreen sister Ally Barone.

The Sweeten family were based in Texas before they moved to California when the twins were just six months old. The family had nine children in total but the other siblings did not enter show business.

Less than one year later, the twins and Madylin were cast on Everybody Loves Raymond

After the series wrapped, Sawyer left Hollywood for good and Sullivan followed suit.

Which twin died from Everybody Loves Raymond?

Sawyer Sweeten sadly passed away in 2015 while visiting his family in his Texas hometown.

The former child reportedly took his own life two weeks shy of his 20th birthday.

"This morning a terrible family tragedy has occurred," the family said in a statement at the time. "We are devastated to report that our beloved brother, son, and friend, Sawyer Sweeten, took his own life. He was weeks away from his 20th birthday. At this sensitive time, our family requests privacy and we beg of you to reach out to the ones you love."

Sawyer died 10 years after the series wrapped.

How did the Everybody Loves Raymond cast react to Sawyer's death?

Tributes flowed for the young star, with his sister Madylin leading the tributes on social media.

"At this time I would like to encourage everyone to reach out to the ones you love," she wrote on Facebook at the time. "Let them have no doubt of what they mean to you."

His Everybody Loves Raymond family also expressed their grief after hearing the news.

"He was a wonderful and sweet kid to be around," Ray Romano, who played his onscreen dad, said in a statement obtained by E! News. "Just a great energy whenever he was there. My heart breaks for him, his family and his friends during this very difficult time."

"Sawyer Sweeten was a funny and exceptionally bright young man. He is gone from us far too soon," tweeted Patricia Heaton, who played his mum on the series.

The actor's onscreen grandma, Doris Roberts, also wrote a touching tribute on Facebook.

"It is with great sadness that I learned the news that Sawyer Sweeten, who played my grandson Geoffrey Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond, died at his family's home in Texas," she wrote.

"He was a very sweet young man who will be dearly missed. Make sure your loved ones know how much you care about them, and please check in with them if you haven't touched base with them for a while. It's very important to keep in touch."

TV uncle, Brad Garrett, was also saddened by the news.

"The Sweeten family is obviously our family. This was devastating news," he said on The View at the time. "We grew up with these children on the set. It's been hard. They're an amazing family, and our love goes out to them, of course. The loss of a child — nothing worse.

"It was devastating. Just broke everyone's heart. Our thoughts and love go out to them, and we're here to support them in any way we can. As a father, I can't imagine anything more frightening."

Where is Sullivan Sweeten now?

While big sister Madylin, now 29, went on to star in TV movies such as The Christmas Path and A Dog of Flanders, and is still working in the industry today, the brothers pretty much retreated from the spotlight.

Even in the lead up to his brother's death, Sullivan, now 25, had shied away from acting, only returning in 2017 for the short film, Casting

Why did they change the twins on Everybody Loves Raymond?

Eagle-eyed fans would have noticed the twins in the pilot episode were different from the twins in the entire series. And there was a name change, too.

The original children were named Alexandra, Gregory and Matthew. But star Ray Romano thought it was too close to home as those were his children's names — the show was based on his life, after all. So writers switched the names to Michael and Geoffrey, while Alexandra's name was shortened to Ally.

The actors who played the original twins were actually triplets Amber, Drew and Justin Ferreira, who shared the role of Matthew and Gregory in the pilot.
