NFL star Jonathan Allen found himself on the receiving end of some backlash after telling a fan that he would have dinner with Hitler if he had the chance. Just a few hours later, Allen apologized for the comment, calling it “dumb”.
The Washington Commanders’ lineman tweeted Wednesday morning that if he could choose any three people to have dinner with, dead or alive, Hitler would be one of them–along with his late grandfather and Michael Jackson. He explained that Hitler’s “military tactics” inspired his answer.
“He’s a military genius and I love military tactics,” Allen said. “But honestly, I would want to pick his brain as to why he did what he did. I’m also assuming that the people I’ve chosen have to answer all of my questions honestly.”

The tweet quickly garnered criticism, to which Allen responded with an apology.
“[Earlier] I tweeted something that probably hurt people and I apologize about what I said,” he wrote on Twitter. “I didn’t express properly what I was trying to say and I realize it was dumb!”
Allen also responded to a fan who expressed his comments were insensitive saying, “I’m sorry I offended you that definitely was not my [intention], I was just answering a question.”
Jonathan Allen, who has been in the league since 2017, is not the only player to be under fire for comments about Hitler. Former NFL All-Pro DeSean Jackson was criticized for posting a quote to Instagram he attributed to Hitler in 2020.
Jackson made commentary alluding to Jews seeking to “blackmail America” and oppress Black Americans. He later apologized, saying he didn’t invent to offend Jews and knows Hitler “was a bad person.”
