Trevor Peacock, who starred as Jim Trott in the UK comedy The Vicar Of Dibley, has died. He was 89.

"Trevor Peacock, actor, writer and song-writer, died aged 89 on the morning of March 8th from a dementia-related illness," Peacock's family said in a statement via the BBC.

Born in Edmonton, North London, in 1931, Peacock began his TV career in the 1960s in the anthology series ITV Television Playhouse, Comedy Playhouse and The Wednesday Play.

Peacock played Jim Trott, a member of Dibley Parish Council, in the BBC comedy, which first premiered in 1994 with Dawn French. He starred in every episode until 2015 but did not appear in Dibley's Christmas specials last year.

The Dibley star also made appearances in EastEnders, Jonathan Creek and sitcom My Family, and in 2007 starred in the film Fred Claus, opposite Vince Vaughn and Paul Giamatti.

French was among those who honoured the late actor.

"Night Trev. I love you," she tweeted.

His agents Scott Marshall Partners said on Twitter: "Remembering our wonderful client Trevor Peacock who died peacefully yesterday. A comic genius and one of the very best humans. We will miss him hugely."
