#Roommates, if you’re all about that Tinder life and have been using the app to hopefully find your forever love match, you’ll be very happy about the company’s latest steps to ensure user safety. According to recent reports, Tinder will soon give users the ability to run official background checks on all potential dates—and there is a lot that will be included in the report.
@Verge reports the new change that is reportedly coming soon to all Tinder users to give them piece of mind when they swipe right to make a love match. Tinder, along with other Match Group apps, will soon give users the choice to run a background check on their potential match using only the match’s first name and phone number. If you’re wondering what will be included in the background check report…well it’s a lot more than you’re probably expecting.
The report is said to include information such as a potential match’s arrest record, restraining orders, history of violence, convictions and more. Garbo, the non-profit organization that will run the background checks elaborated on what information will be available to potential dating matches. The company says “public records and reports of violence or abuse, including arrests, convictions, restraining orders, harassment, and other violent crimes.” Additionally, Garbo will also allow manually submitted “police reports, orders of protection, restraining orders and other legal documents that report abuse, harassment, or other crimes.”
However, there are certain things that won’t be publicized if found on your background check. Drug possession charges will not be publicized in an effort to take an “active stance toward equity.” This is due to the largely unbalanced percentage of Black people who are arrested and convicted for drug charges compared to white people. Traffic violations will also not be disclosed to potential matches.
It should be noted that if you are a Tinder user who wants to use the new background check feature…there will be a cost. The exact pricing has not yet been figured out, but Tinder and Garbo are currently working to decide the amount that works best. Once the Tinder feature is up and running, other Match Group brands will possibly follow, including OkCupid, Match and Hinge.
