President Joe Biden is following up on the White House invitation he made to George Floyd’s family back in April. After Derek Chauvin was convicted of George’s death, President Joe made a call to the family. Joe could be heard on video saying he was “anxious” to see the family and that they’d “better all get ready” to visit via Air Force One, according to USA Today. Well, Joe is making good on his promise and will reportedly be hosting George’s family at the White House this upcoming Tuesday.

CNBC confirmed the scheduled visit with an administration official. However, no details were given on how the family would be arriving to the White House. Tuesday, which is May 25, marks the one-year anniversary of George’s murder at the hands of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. The sickening death sparked a summer of “international protests against police brutality and racism in the criminal justice system.”

The visit also marks the deadline President Joe set for both chambers of Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. The bipartisan, police reform bill was already passed by the House in March. It “seeks to ban chokeholds, carotid holds and no-knock warrants as well as end qualified immunity.” Additionally, the legislation hopes to track police misconduct via a national registry and ban law enforcement from conducting racial and religious profiling, according to CNN.

However, “the evenly divided Senate” have been unable to come to a compromise on the bill. CNBC reported that ending qualified immunity is the primary point of the disagreements. Qualified immunity currently “makes it difficult to sue individual officers.” GOP senators, in particular, are “concerned” that ending qualified immunity might open up officers and police departments to plenty of lawsuits.
