#Roommates, following the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes throughout the country, President Joe Biden has officially stepped in to ensure that the attacks no longer continue. In a recent press conference from the White House, President Biden (along with VP Kamala Harris) formally signed the new anti-Asian hate crime bill into law.

@CNN reports, in response to the alarming rise in anti-Asian hate crimes that increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, President Joe Biden just signed official legislation in the form of a new Asian hate crime bill. While speaking about the bill, Biden stated “I believe, with every fiber of my being, that there are simple, core values and beliefs that should bring us together as Americans. One of them is standing together against hate, against racism — an ugly poison that has long haunted and plagued our nation. Today I can say that because of all of you … you’ve taken that first step.””

The anti-Asian legislation is formally referred to as the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act—which is set to create a new position at the Justice Department to review COVID-19-related hate crimes and incidents as reported at the federal, state, or local level. Additionally, the bill also directs the Justice Department and Health and Human Services to work with organizations to issue guidance raising awareness of hate crimes, and requiring the attorney general to work with state and local law enforcement agencies to establish online reporting of any hate crimes.

According to recent statistics, hate crimes against Asians are up 164% within the last year. Following multiple attacks in the U.S. Earlier this year, many were saddened when Robert Aaron Long went on a targeted shooting spree in Atlanta, where he tragically killed almost a dozen residents of Asian descent.
