Born Beryl Hunt in 1929, Desmond grew up in Mittagong, NSW, before moving to the United Kingdom with her family when she was 10 years old. In 1957, she represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest before returning to Australia in the early '60s. Her career kicked off as presenter of the music variety show The Lorrae Desmond Show, which ran from 1960 to 1964. In 1961, she made history by being the first woman on television to win the Gold Logie — which was actually Silver, as women at the time received the Silver Statuette, and men received the Gold.

Desmond's acting credits include programs such as Homicide, Number 96 and Arcade. But she was best known for her long-running role as Shirley Gilroy in the television series A Country Practice from 1981 to 1992. In 1997, she briefly guest-starred in Home and Away as Isobel Dupre, the mother of Donald Fisher (played by Norman Coburn).

Desmond was also honoured with the MBE for services to entertainment during her time in Vietnam amid the country's conflict.
