After 11 days of deadly violence including bombings, Israelis and the Palestinian militant group Hamas have agreed to put down their weapons. This comes after airstrikes from Israel “killed 232 Palestinians” and Palestinian militants killed “12 people in Israel,” according to reports by CNN. Those deaths include 65 children in Palestine, and 2 children in Israel. Egypt, which neighbors the fighting countries, negotiated the ceasefire terms.

According to CNN, the truce will take effect “at 2 a.m. local time on Friday.” Israel’s security cabinet unanimously accepted all the security recommendations put forth in the truce. The Palestine United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) tweeted out on Wednesday that over 72,000 people are displaced from their homes in Gaza. To clarify, Gaza is a strip of Palestinian territory bordering Egypt.

Palestinian militants have caused their share of damage as “more than 4,000 rockets” were fired into Israel. Although they’ve agreed to a ceasefire, the Prime Minister’s Office in Israel has said it will “re-start its campaign against militant groups in Gaza” if they break the peace agreement.

Near the start of the violence, American politicians began to speak out on social media. Among those speaking out was Senator Bernie Sanders, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Representative Ilhan Omar.

“Many will tell you Israel has a right to defend itself, to safety and security, but are silent on whether Palestinians have those rights too,” Ilhan tweeted. “Until we can defend the rights of Palestinians just as we do Israelis, we have no leg to stand on when it comes to justice or peace.”

Additional international pressure came when President Joe Biden chimed in on the violence. According to CNN, Joe put in a fourth call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday. Both Joe and the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made it clear to Israeli officials that they expect “de-escalation on the path to a ceasefire.”
