SPOILER ALERT: Do not read until you have watched Season 17, episode four of Grey's Anatomy.
Season 17 of Grey's Anatomy has chosen to include the reality of the coronavirus pandemic in its script, with main character Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) being diagnosed with COVID-19.
As she battles the illness in ICU, she's repeatedly had dreams set on a beach, where she's been reunited with beloved characters who have died. When her ex-husband Derek 'McDreamy' Shepherd showed up, fans collectively lost their minds with excitement.
After Grey's creators teased the return of another fan favourite, this week saw T.R. Knight, who plays George O'Malley, grace our screens once more. George left the show after he died in a bus crash at the end of Season 5.
Once the episode aired in the US, Knight spoke to Deadline about his return, saying that it was a nice way to bring closure to George's story and it was an immediate 'yes' when asked to film a scene.
"It was just unlike any other experience I've ever had in my entire life," he said of being reunited with his co-stars and the show's crew. "It was just wave upon wave of happiness, of joy."
Grey's showrunner Krista Vernoff told Deadline she experienced the same pure joy upon seeing George and Meredith reunite. "The joy that filled me up when the image came, I believe, is translated on screen," she said. "I believe we have given many millions of fans that moment of pure joy with this, and right now in our lives, in this pandemic pure joy is rare."
"Ellen [Pompeo] and T.R. are close, and George and T.R. were both always favourites of mine, and so he was my first idea of, as a fan, who do I want to see again?" she added. "I wanted to see George, so that's where it started."
In celebration of the episode airing, Knight posted a series of Instagram photos where he gushed about his co-stars and the character that changed his life.
"George O'Malley will always claim my heart," he wrote. "Thank you to Ellen, Chandra [Wilson], Jim [Pickens], Krista [Vernoff], and all the familiar faces for once again sharing your beautiful light."
