Lea Michele has reflected on her road to motherhood and it wasn't an easy one.
The Glee alum shared her experience on Katherine Schwarzenegger's Instagram Live series Before, During & After as they bonded over becoming new mums in the last year. Schwarzenegger welcomed daughter Lyla with husband Chris Pratt last August, and that same month Michele welcomed son Ever with her husband Zandy Reich.
"I had a very, very intense, very scary pregnancy," 37-year-old Michele began. "I've never shared my experience with anyone, which I think is something that — now that I am a mum — I see myself doing in a lot of ways, not sharing for fear of not sounding perfect or just being afraid … I withheld a lot of my experience."https://www.instagram.com/p/CMID8mVlm8I/
In the Instagram Live session, the actress said her quest to become a mother was challenging as she was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
She and Reich tried to conceive for such a long time, and took hormones and had multiple surgeries, but it just wasn't happening.
"I really felt like maybe this isn't meant to be for me right now," she recalled, adding, it was "always my biggest fear in my entire life that I wouldn't be able to become a mum. It's what I've wanted more than anything. And, emotionally, it just started to build and build. For multiple reasons, it really started to effect me mentally."https://www.instagram.com/p/CMelFp8lMmf/
But in December 2019, while hitting pause on trying to conceive, the couple was pleasantly surprised to learn they were expecting. Although they were hit with another roadblock when Michele started bleeding heavily, which lasted throughout her first trimester.
The bleeding got so bad once, she was rushed to hospital.
"It was just horrible. It was absolutely, absolutely horrible. I finally announced I was pregnant, and I still was uncertain if the pregnancy was going to last," she said.
"I just woke up and I was like, 'I just want to be a mum right now. I want this time.' And it was horrible. It was the lowest I've been in my entire life."https://www.instagram.com/p/CIjGzDzlFq3/
After a bumpy road, it was relatively smooth sailing in the two months before Ever's birth and she got to relax and enjoy her pregnancy.
Really taking time to embrace her impending motherhood, Michele also deleted her Twitter account in July 2020.
At the time, the actress was being trolled over allegations of bad behaviour on the set of Glee and she also lost her co-star Naya Rivera in an accidental drowning.
