You might remember Drake Bell as one half of iconic '00s kids show Drake & Josh. He's also a singer in his own right, and has released five albums since 2005.

In the last few years, he's gone through a bit of a rebrand and now fans are questioning the motives behind it.

Let's start at the beginning: last year Bell tweeted in Spanish, "My social networks will now only be in Spanish, no more English." He also changed his last name on social media to Campana, which means bell in Spanish.

A few months ago, he told Esquire that he did it for a love of Mexico and its culture: "I wanted to do something for the fans of Mexico, with Latin rhythms, and I wanted to do something like what I have heard on my tours and visits to Mexico, I love writing in Spanish, it is a beautiful language."

Some people speculated that he made the change because of the higher streaming and sales numbers that artists can achieve with Spanish-speaking audiences. In fact, his two highest-charting songs on Spotify are both in Spanish.

But after Bell's ex-girlfriend, Jimi Ono, went viral on TikTok with videos alleging that he had abused her, some has speculated that this was the reason he left the country and changed his name.

"When I started dating Drake, I was 16. I was home-schooled. I moved in with him," Ono said in the video. "It wasn't until about a year when the verbal abuse started, and when I say verbal abuse, imagine the worst type of verbal abuse you could ever imagine, and that was what I got. It then turned to physical — hitting, throwing, everything."

"At the pinnacle of it, he drug me down the stairs of our house in Los Feliz. My face hit every step on the way down. I have photos of this."

The video was published in August, and at the time Bell denied the claims in a statement to Variety.

Now, a few months later, people are now starting to discuss a possible link between Bell's relocation and Ono's story. Multiple tweets with thousands of retweets have been posted this week, questioning Bell's motive.

"Just found out Drake Bell was outed as an abuser, changed his name to Drake Campana, fled to Mexico, and started a new life as a Spanish pop artist who exclusively sings and writes songs in Spanish. Literally nothing could have prepared me for this information," one person wrote on Twitter.

Bell has made no comments since the situation has gone viral again.
