Dennis Waterman's ex-wife Patricia Maynard has spoken out following the actor's death, confirming he was quietly battling cancer.

The New Tricks star passed away on May 8 in his Spanish home with his wife, Pam Flint, by his side.

Speaking to Daily Mail, Maynard – who was Waterman's second wife – confirmed the actor had lung cancer for the last two years.

"I'm terribly sad that he's gone but I'm really pleased that he did not suffer and died peacefully," she told the outlet.

"He had lung cancer and was really quite poorly for the last couple of years. The girls are very upset.

"The years that Dennis and I were together were happy. Obviously, it didn't work out but lots of marriages don't work out for whatever reason. But I'm so glad he had found the right woman at the end. I think he was very happy with Pam and she was with him when he passed."

Waterman was married three times, before finding love with his wife Pam Flint, whom he wed in 2011.

His previous marriage to first wife Rula Lenska, who he was with from 1987 to 1998, ended in controversy, allegedly due to his violent behaviour towards her.

"It's not difficult for a woman to make a man hit her. She certainly wasn't a beaten wife, she was hit and that's different," Waterman told Piers Morgan during an episode of Life Stories in 2012.

The actor's family confirmed his death in a statement: "We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved Dennis, passed away very peacefully at his home in Spain. The family kindly ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

Waterman spent 60 years on the stage and small screen, but he is best known for playing George Carter in The Sweeney and Terry McCann in Minder.
