Armie Hammer has exited yet another project, after sexual assault allegations were levelled against him last month.
According to multiple sources, the 34-year-old actor has withdrawn from his role in the Broadway play The Minutes.
In a statement, Hammer explained that he needs to "focus on myself" and his health for the sake of his family.
"I have loved every single second of working on The Minutes with the family I made from Steppenwolf," Hammer said in a statement given to Deadline on Friday. "But right now I need to focus on myself and my health for the sake of my family. Consequently, I will not be returning to Broadway with the production."
Hammer is currently being investigated by LAPD after a woman came forward with violent rape allegation against him.
The woman, named Effie, is accusing Hammer of violent rape and physical abuse, during their on-and-off four-year relationship from 2016 to 2020.
"I thought that he was going to kill me," she said in a press conference.
In response to the allegations, Hammer's attorney, Andrew Brettler, released a statement to Variety, strongly denying the rape allegation and Effie's other claims.
"From day one, Mr Hammer has maintained that all of his interactions with [Effie] — and every other sexual partner of his for that matter — have been completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participatory," Brettler said in the statement.
In addition to Hammer's statement about leaving the play, The Minutes team also told Deadline, "Armie remains a valued colleague to all of us who have worked with him onstage and offstage on The Minutes. We wish only the best for him and respect his decision."
Hammer was a part of the original production in 2017, and was set to reprise his role last year before the production was shutdown due to coronavirus.
