Woolworths has launched a new grocery delivery service for vulnerable customers across the nation, after the Prime Minister's latest COVID-19 warnings urged people aged over 70 to self-isolate.
The 'Woolworths Basics Box' is set to roll-out across NSW and Victoria this week, following the launch of the service in the ACT over the weekend. Other states would also receive the service in coming weeks.
Each grocery box would contain meals, snacks and essential items for those in genuine need at a cost of $80, inclusive of delivery.
The grocery service, in partnership with Australia Post, aims to provide essential products to customers who are unable to visit supermarkets and grocery stores, including the elderly, people with a disability, those with compromised immunity and people in mandatory isolation.
It comes as Prime Minister Scott Morrison last night strongly advised elderly Australians aged over 70 to stay inside their homes as a protective measure against coronavirus.
"We understand many of our older or more vulnerable customers will be anxious about their food and grocery needs in the weeks ahead," Woolworths Group CEO Brad Banducci said.
"Going to the supermarket is a key part of everyday life for many of them, and some will have never even considered ordering groceries online before.
"We're working at pace to reshape our business, and thanks to the support of the likes of Australia Post, we will be able to better service those in self-isolation."
Once an order has been placed, customers would receive updates on the delivery from Australia Post via text message and email.
Group CEO and Managing Director of Australia Post, Christine Holgate said the grocery delivery service followed their Pharmacy Home Delivery Service, aimed at assisting those needing to self-isolate and vunerable customers.
"We know so many people are really struggling to get their essential needs during this time, particularly the vulnerable and elderly who may not be able to visit their local supermarket," she said.
"Making delivery to people's home is critical at this time."
