A woman has been found dead on a rural property in Victoria's east overnight.

Police made the grim discovery in the Gippsland suburb of Hedley at 2.30am.

A 43-year-old man known to the woman is currently under police guard in hospital after he was involved in a car crash earlier in the night.

The death is being investigated by the Homicide Squad and the exact circumstances surrounding the death is yet to be determined.
