A Californian man has been arrested after police found him standing over the body of his grandmother, allegedly attempting to eat her.

Shortly after 2pm Monday, police in the Californian city of Richmond responded to reports of a woman on the ground bleeding and a man standing over her.

When they arrived, officers found 37-year-old Dwayne Wallick standing over his 90-year-old grandmother Ruby Wallick.

Richmond police spokesman Sergeant Aaron Pomeroy told local media that officers found Mr Wallick "digging in her flesh" at the scene.

Officers used a Taser to subdue Mr Wallick and paramedics rushed to treat Ms Wallick.

The 90-year-old was declared dead at the scene and Mr Wallick was taken to a nearby medical facility for a physical health evaluation.

Investigators are looking into possible drug use and expect to ask for murder charges to be filed against Mr Wallick later this week.
