UK records highest number of virus cases since start of the pandemic

It comes as parts of Europe have began reintroducing strict measures to ward off a second wave of the virus, ahead of northern winter.

The UK has recorded its highest number of coronavirus cases since the pandemic began.

A total of 6634 new positive cases were confirmed on Thursday, up from 6178 on Wednesday.

But some health experts have cautioned labelling the grim milestone as a 'record' saying it wasn't clear how many people were actually infected during the height of the first wave due to a lack of community testing at the time.

Some estimates suggest there may have been as many 100,000 cases a day at the peak.

A further 40 people have died as of Thursday, bringing the UK total to 41,902.

"This is the highest number recorded and a stark warning for us all", Yvonne Doyle, Medical Director at Public Health England, said.

"The signals are clear. Positivity rates are rising across all age groups and we're continuing to see spikes in rates of admission to hospital and critical care.

"We must all follow the new measures that have been bought in to help control the virus."

The rise in cases comes just days after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed further restrictions to stop the spread of the virus, including a 10pm closing time on pubs, restaurants and hospitality venues.
