Two people have been airlifted to hospital and several horses have been killed in a crash in the NSW Hunter Region

NSW Police said the crash happened about 6.30am this morning near Muswellbrook.

Live Traffic said the "serious crash" had closed the Golden Highway at Jerrys Plains, near Singleton and 200km north of Sydney.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said they were still establishing the details of the accident, amid reports the four animals killed were prized racehorses.

The two patients were taken to John Hunter Hospital.
