More than 200 people across 27 US states may have come into contact with a Texas man who brought a rare case of monkeypox back with him from Nigeria.

The Dallas resident was hospitalised earlier this month after returning from Nigeria with the first believed case of the virus in the US since 2003.

While the man is in a stable condition and no other cases have been identified, the US Centres for Disease Control are concerned for passengers on two flights the man travelled on.

The CDC confirmed the man travelled into Atlanta, Georgie, from Lagos on July 9, before taking another flight to Dallas where he started to feel ill.

They said the risk to others on the flights and in the airport is low, especially in light of COVID-19-related masking policies. However, efforts are underway to contact his fellow passengers.

However, this is believed to be the first monkeypox virus infection in a Texas resident, according to Dallas County health officials.
