US President Donald Trump has thanked himself for keeping relative peace in Washington, D.C. and Minneapolis while praising authorities for displaying "domination" and deploying "overwhelming force".

Mr Trump's boast came a day after police violently cleared the area of protesters in front of the White House with tear gas, flash grenades and batons so that the president could walk out and pose for photos at a nearby church.

Mr Trump held a Bible as media captured images of him standing stony-faced in front of the historic St John's Episcopal Church church.

"D.C. had no problems last night. Many arrests. Great job done by all. Overwhelming force. Domination. Likewise, Minneapolis was great (thank you President Trump!)," he tweeted.

Before his church visit yesterday, Mr Trump declared he was mobilising federal resources — civilian and military — to respond to the protests.

He said that if any city or state refused to take steps to defend lives and property, he would deploy military forces to those areas.

In another Twitter post, Mr Trump slammed New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and his brother, CNN journalist Chris Cuomo.

Mr Trump suggested that violence and looting on the streets of New York City came after the governor's failure to accept the president's offer to deploy the National Guard.

"Yesterday was a bad day for the Cuomo Brothers. New York was lost to the looters, thugs, Radical Left, and all others forms of Lowlife & Scum," Mr Trump wrote.

Mr Trump's tweets triggered condemnation by former US vice president Joe Biden, who is set to be the Democratic presidential nominee in the general election this year.

Mr Biden said the president had deployed the US military against its citizens for a photo opportunity.

Protests over George Floyd's death have taken place across US cities.

He died Monday last during an arrest by Minneapolis police when a white police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes while ignoring appeals to stop.
