Truckie who spread COVID-19 to regional Victoria fined

The truckie has been fined $1652 for dining in at a Kilmore cafe, but not for initially failing to disclose to contact tracers where he had been.

The Melbourne truck driver who spread coronavirus into regional Victoria has been fined by Victoria Police.

The truckie has been fined $1652 for dining in at a Kilmore cafe, but not for initially failing to disclose to contact tracers where he had been.

The infected driver dined at the Oddfellows Cafe in Kilmore on September 30, infecting one of the cafe workers amongst others.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton told 3AW's Neil Mitchell this morning that the man was fined on October 17.

The trip to Kilmore and Shepparton sparked a cluster of nine cases in the previously COVID-free region.

Huge resources were poured in to containing the outbreak, with the Australian Defence Force being deployed to the region and mass testing conducted.

Oddfellows Cafe in Kilmore, Victoria has a staff member with coronavirus after an infected diner visitedThe testing centre at Shepparton Showground has already closed, after it reached its capacity of 300 people.

The man had a valid work permit to leave metropolitan Melbourne but was not permitted to eat in regional Victorian restaurants or cafes.

Authorities had previously stated the truck driver deliberately mislead contact tracers about where he had been to, but he has not been fined for failing to tell authorities where he had been.
