The boss of Air New Zealand has dashed hopes of a trans-Tasman travel bubble starting soon.

Greg Foran, the airline's chief executive, said the likelihood of quarantine-free air travel between Australia and New Zealand won't be considered until at least next March, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

The Australian and New Zealand governments had high hopes of a travel bubble between the two nations starting as early as this month before second waves of infections struck Melbourne and Auckland.

But Mr Foran said it won't be happening any time soon.

"I certainly do not believe we will see anything across the Tasman this calendar year. It's hard to believe it would be before March next year and could well be longer," he says.

Mr Foran said eliminating COVID-19 was an unrealistic goal and countries had to learn to live with the pandemic.
