A top Sydney selective school has been forced to close and HSC trial exams have been put on hold after a student tested positive for COVID-19.

A top Sydney selective school has been forced to close and HSC trial exams have been put on hold after a student tested positive for coronavirus.

Sydney Girls High School at Moore Park announced it will close today following news of the infection.

The school said a scheduled HSC trial examination "will be rescheduled and students notified".

In a statement, the school said all staff and students have been advised to self-isolate while contact tracing is carried out.

"The Department has been advised by NSW Health this morning that a student has tested positive for COVID-19.

"The school will be nonoperational tomorrow for the onsite attendance of staff and students to allow time for the school to complete contact tracing and have the school cleaned.

"The trial HSC examination planned for tomorrow will not take place."

NSW yesterday recorded five new COVID-19 cases. Four of them are linked to known clusters, while one was being investigated.

A man aged in his 80s also died after testing positive for coronavirus, NSW Health said.

Last week, a Sydney girls school linked to 21 coronavirus cases was cleared by authorities of breaching any restrictions or public health orders.

NSW Police commenced an investigation into Tangara School for Girls in Cherrybrook after a parent raised concerns about recent school masses and assemblies.

But authorities on Friday deemed no public health orders had been breached.
