A teenage girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man sitting next to her on a bench in Melbourne's south-east managed to snap a photo of the suspect.

Police were told the 17-year-old girl was sitting on a bench on Young Street, opposite Frankston Railway Station about 11.40am on June 29, when a man sat down next to her and allegedly sexually assaulted her.

The man walked away towards Beach Street, but not before the quick-thinking victim managed to take a photo.

Detectives have released an image and CCTV footage of the man in the hope someone will be able to identify him.

He is described as Caucasian in appearance, with short, spikey dark hair and aged between 25 and 40.

The man was wearing jeans and a blue T-shirt with a 'New York' motif on the front.

His fingernails were painted, and he was wearing distinctive mustard-coloured shoes.

The investigation remains ongoing and police are appealing for anyone who recognises the man to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
