Statement on Labor Leadership

Today I stood unopposed for the role of Deputy Leader of the Tasmanian Labor Party.

I am humbled by the confidence and trust my Parliamentary colleagues have placed in me.

I would like to extend my thanks to former Labor Leader Rebecca White for her outstanding leadership over the last four years and to Michelle O’Byrne for her outstanding contribution as Deputy Leader of the Labor Party over many years.

I have big shoes to fill and I am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead with my focus being working together with our new leader to rebuild the Labor Party across Tasmania, bringing a greater focus to regional communities and working collaboratively and constructively with our members.

I will also be acting Labor Leader until a new leader is elected.

Today both Labor Member for Braddon Shane Broad and Labor Member for Franklin David O’Byrne have put their hand up to lead the Tasmanian Parliamentary Labor Party.

As a result, the leadership will be decided by ballot of party members through a process that may take a number of weeks.

During this period we will continue to hold the Government to account, and work hard for Tasmanians that have entrusted their vote in Labor.

Tasmanian Times has invited both David O’Byrne and Shane Broad to write 1000 words each on their candidacies for leadership of the parliamentary Labor Party. We look forward to their responses.
