Finding a snake in your car is never going to be a pleasant shock - but spotting one in the glovebox has to be a special kind of spine-chilling.

Queensland-based Andrew's Snake Removal posted a video of just that situation on Facebook, showing the removal of a red-bellied black snake from the compartment.

Andrew said the woman had called them after getting a "hell of a fright" while driving in Lowood, west of Brisbane.

"I opened up the glove box and there it was sitting nice and content," he said.

"It's usually a nightmare to find a snake when its got into a car but luckily found this guy pretty quickly."

Andrew told 9News the snake had not been aggressive, even when he had been removing it from its cosy space.

And with the warmer weather heralding the start of Australia's snake season, he said it was important to keep a good perspective about the animals.

"No snake will chase you, no snake will try to bite you unless it feels threatened," he said.

He said anybody encountering a snake should stay calm, not interfere with it, observe it from a distance and if possible contact a professional snake catcher.
