Queensland police have released video of a car exploding into flames on a suburban Gold Coast street and are searching for a masked offender.

Police said the incident happened about 10.25pm on Saturday, May 9.

Emergency services were called following reports a man in a Holden Barina without registration plates exited the car, poured a flammable liquid inside and set it on fire outside a driveway on Cook Close in Southport.

CCTV shows an initial explosion before the individual, wearing a skeleton mask, ran from the scene.

According to the time stamp, the car became fully engulfed within about three minutes.

In the video, flames which had been licking the driver's seat door spread across the bonnet and inside the engine, at one point making the headlights look as if they were on. No-one was hurt in the incident.

Police are appealing for any witnesses, CCTV or access to any dash cam footage in and around the Cook Close, Everest Drive and Edmund Rice Drive area on the night of May 9.
