A security guard is behind bars tonight, charged with attacking three police officers he was meant to be assisting at a music festival in inner Melbourne.

The 27-year-old was worked as a security guard at the For the Love music festival in St Kilda when an altercation broke out with police around 10pm last night.

The officers had arrived at the festival to assist in keeping the peace as patrons left.

It is unclear what sparked the altercation, but police say he then became violent, resisting arrest and attacking three police officers – two male constables and a female sergeant.

He is now facing a raft of charges, including intentionally causing injury, resisting arrest and assaulting police.

The officers were assessed by paramedics at the scene but didn't require further treatment.

The accused was taken by ambulance to The Alfred Hospital before he was interviewed by police.

He was refused bail at Melbourne Magistrates Court this evening, and is next due to appear on February 24.

The one-day musical festival was headlined by DJ Hayden James and indie bands Gorgon City and SAFIA.
