REVEALED: SECRET GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRY MAPS THAT SHOW HUGE POTENTIAL SEA GRAB FOR AQUACULTURE

Author Richard Flanagan and the Tasmanian Alliance for Marine Protection, TAMP, have revealed the existence of a secret map that opens huge new areas of Tasmania’s coastline to potential industrial salmon farming and other aquaculture industries.

The map wipes out enormous areas of the coastline that had been designated “No Grow” zones by the Liberal government.

According to the map drawn up by government bureaucrats and industry representatives behind closed doors, areas deemed suitable for the industry now include the entire north coast, east of King Island, all the seas surrounding the Furneaux Islands and the entire east coast from Cape Portland in the far north east to Storm Bay and Southeast Cape.

The map vastly increases areas suitable at present and further increases areas which are considered suitable for future development as technologies evolve.

There is now a detailed map that responds to industry complaints that the original “Grow” and “No Grow” zones were drawn up by the government without consultation with Tassal, Huon Aquaculture or Petuna.

Having promised Tasmanians that large parts of the coastline would stay free of floating feedlots, the only areas left untouched will be areas where the seas and rugged shoreline are considered far too rough and dangerous. Yet even some areas of the rugged west coast are designated as “suitable for future technology”.

TAMP challenges the government to deny that a number of detailed maps exists – which it cannot do as Richard Flanagan and TAMP have seen them – or immediately publish the maps so that Tasmanians can see what awaits them.

It is utterly irresponsible for the government to bend to the industry’s will when the salmon industry has been shown to damage marine life, coastal areas and to devastate communities.

TAMP has consistently advocated a transition to a sustainable industry ashore in recirculated aquaculture systems which is happening all over the world in response to wide community condemnation of the industry in other nations.

Richard Flanagan revealed the existence of the maps at a public meeting in Burnie yesterday (Saturday). He will speak at a second public meeting organised by NWTas for Clean Oceans in Stanley at 1pm today.
