SBS News will soon be a welcome addition to Tasmania’s media landscape as the multicultural broadcaster prepares to post a correspondent in Hobart – a first for the Special Broadcasting Service.

The move generally is contrary to the global trend for contracting news resources and is applauded by the Tasmanian Times for boosting diversity in Tasmanian story-telling.

SBS director of news and current affairs Jim Carroll said it is the first time SBS News will have a journalist based in the state.

”Over recent years we have been focused on boosting our domestic coverage to ensure we are covering stories from multicultural and Indigenous communities that may go untold in national media,’’ Mr Carroll told TT.

”Having made a number of visits to Tasmania over the past eighteen months and meeting community representatives it became increasingly obvious to me that we needed a reporter on the ground.

”With tight budgets it has taken us a little time to secure funding for the position but we are now ready to push ahead.’’

The role is for a video journalist so applicants must also be able to shoot and edit video.

The principal function of the SBS is to provide multilingual and multicultural broadcasting and digital media services that inform, educate and entertain all Australians and, in doing so, reflect Australia’s multicultural society.

SBS strongly encourages people of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background to apply.
