A new prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case has formally applied for early release from prison after becoming eligible for parole.

A new prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case has formally applied for early release from prison after becoming eligible for parole.

The latest development comes as newly unearthed satellite pictures possibly show his camper van several kilometres from where the three-year-old vanished just days after.

Christian Brueckner, now 43, is also being re-examined in the disappearance of a nine-year-old German schoolgirl and other missing children cases.

Satellite images taken shortly after Madeleine McCann's disappearance appear to show the prime suspect's camper van parked about two kilometres away from her hotel.

A German prosecutor told Sky News he has evidence Madeleine is dead as he appealed to British tourists to help identify the suspect's former homes.

Hans Christian Wolters said police needed more information about where Brueckner, identified as Christian B in German media, lived so police can search for Madeleine's body.

He said he did not have enough evidence currently for the suspect to go on trial.

"At the moment we cannot substantiate our suspicions in such a way that we could, for example, also apply for an arrest warrant against him here in Germany for the murder of Madeleine McCann. And we also have too little evidence at the moment to be able to file an indictment in court," Mr Wolters said.

He made it clear that they were treating the case as a murder investigation and were working on the assumption that the missing girl was dead.

"According to our indications, the girl is dead. We have no evidence that she is alive," he said.

Brueckner, currently in prison in Germany, spent many years in Portugal, including in Praia da Luz around the time of Madeleine's disappearance, and has two previous convictions for "sexual contact with girls", authorities said.

Madeleine was almost four years old when she disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in May 2007, while her parents dined nearby.

Prosecutors in the northern German town of Stendal told the DPA news agency last week they have opened a preliminary investigation to determine whether there was anything to link the suspect to the 2015 disappearance of a five-year-old.
