An original artwork by surrealist master Salvador Dali has been discovered hanging in a US thrift shop.

The painting was created by Dali during the 1950s as part of a series on the classic Italian medieval poem The Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri.

Thrift shop volunteer Wendy Hawkins discovered the painting in January, the Virginia Pilot reported.

Art appraiser Melanie Smith said the piece fit with other Dali works.

It sold to a Portsmouth couple for $1200.

The money will go to the Outer Banks charity, which runs a shelter for runaway teens, victims of violence, and human trafficking.
