Parents have expressed their outrage after a toddler was able to escape from a daycare centre in Wollongong south of Sydney.

The young girl slipped out of a gate at the Little Peoples Early Learning Centre.

Across the road, Jacke Drleski's daughter spotted the toddler wandering.

"The cars were passing on the street, and we had to grab her and bring her back to our place," Ms Drleski told 9News.

"She was disoriented, she didn't know what she was doing."

Parents today said it was a "serious safety concern".

Police lodged a child-at-risk notification, which alerted the Education Department.

Inspectors have been sent to investigate the incident.

9News understands the centre operators will face some form of sanction.

The centre released a statement this afternoon saying the supervising staff had been suspended.

"We sincerely apologise to the parents of the child for this unfortunate incident," the statement read.
