Qantas making new cuts to flying schedule

Qantas is making new cuts to its flying schedule beyond those announced last week after Australia and New Zealand imposed tighter travel limits due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The airline made the changes after Australia and New Zealand said international travellers would be required to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival.

It said this will have a major impact on domestic and international demand.

Sydney's airport is jammed with frustrated passengers who landed hours after Australia's tough new coronavirus travel measures were rolled out.

The airline says it is offering greater flexibility for customers wishing to change their travel plans and customers booked on Qantas and Jetstar flights will be able to cancel their bookings in exchange for travel credit.

"We understand that some customers would prefer not to travel at the moment," Qantas Group chief customer officer Stephanie Tully said.

"We have removed the standard change fees, where it applies, and are giving customers the option to cancel their flight and receive a travel voucher that can be used anywhere on our network at a later date," she said.

The changes are available for Qantas, Jetstar and QantasLink flights and apply until March 31 for travel until May 31.

Last week Qantas Group announced further cuts to its international flying, reducing capacity by almost a quarter for the next six months.

"We've moved immediately to offer a booking waiver to our customers and we're working through the implications for our schedule now given the expected impact on demand, with a view to announcing more detail as soon as possible," a Qantas spokesman said said.
