An owner of four pubs in Sydney says restrictions that allow only 10 patrons at a time are "prohibitive" and allow only a handful of food service venues to open to a profit.

Good Beer Company owner John Azar spoke to Ben Fordham on 2GB today to discuss the easing of coronavirus restrictions.

"Some of the larger venues, we can operate with 300-500 people, and to get anything under that, we'd be losing money," he said.

He said the new rules which come into effect on Friday in NSW are a good start, but they would mainly help smaller venues.

Johnnie Gambaro of the Gambaro groups of pubs and clubs said he would be re-opening two of his venues in Brisbane.

"There's no right or wrong, but we're going to be opening on Saturday night to only 10 people at a time," he said.

But he recognised that it wouldn't be easy for most pubs, saying he's "been really clear with communication to guests" and most people will understand the changes and respect the need for other people to attend the pub.

"Are we happy? No. But it's no-one's fault. We are happy to be getting our staff back in and upskilled again so that when things do change again, we'll be ready to get back to the quality that we're known for."
