Two popular Victorian ski resorts have closed effective immediately due to the coronavirus crisis in the state.

Falls Creek and Mount Hotham ski resorts have closed as a result of new restrictions and the NSW border lockdown.

"We have made the difficult decision to suspend operations at Hotham and Falls Creek, effective Thursday July 9 through to at least August 19," Vail Resorts, the US company which owns the ski fields, said in a statement.

"We recognise the impact this has on our guests, employees and communities and did not make this decision lightly."

Vail Resorts cited the recent rise in cases of coronavirus and say public health and safety is their key motivator.

"We will continue to assess the situation and follow guidelines of the state health authorities in evaluating if it is advisable or feasible to reopen either resort," the statement said.

Vail said Perisher, its resort in the NSW Snowy Mountains, remains open.

All lift tickets, lessons and rental reservations at Mount Hotham and Falls Creek resorts will be refunded.
