NSW police are treating the death of a man in his 70s in an apartment in Sydney’s east as suspicious.

NSW police are treating the death of a man in his 70s in an apartment in Sydney's east as suspicious.

Emergency services were called to a unit on Elphinstone Road, South Coogee, about 11.20am today following welfare concerns for the male resident.

NSW Police said in a statement officers from Easterns Beaches Police Area Command arrived at the property to find the body of a man believed to be in his 70s.

The body has not yet been formally identified.

9News understands the man's body, which had suspicious injuries, was found by his ex-wife.

9News also understands police are looking at the possibility of a violent home invasion.

A crime scene has been established at the property with forensic officers at the scene.

A port mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
