A South Australian man is behind bars tonight charged with attempted murder after a man was stabbed inside his own home in Adelaide's west.

Blood stains were the only sign of what had unfolded minutes earlier by the time police arrived at Newporter Terrace in West Lakes Shore just after 9pm yesterday.

The accused attacker had fled; while the alleged victim had been rushed to hospital by a friend.

Officers cordoned off the street and began searching for a weapon by torchlight as Crime Scene Examiners were called in.

Within hours, a 34-year-old man from Two Wells had been arrested.

"It came as a bit of a shock – just, cop cars everywhere," one witness Karl Johanson told 9News.

The alleged victim remains in a serious condition in hospital with multiple stab wounds.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The 43-year-old lived at the home with his mother and girlfriend, neighbours told 9News.

Police say his alleged attacker is known to him.

One neighbour, known only as Allison, was left rattled by the violent incident.

"You think it's shocking even if it's not on your street, but when it's so close to home, it is quite scary," she said.

The accused has been refused police bail and will appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court tomorrow.
