Four people have been arrested after a police car was pummelled with rocks and bottles in a South Australian town in the early hours of this morning.

Armed police raided the home in Murray Bridge, east of Adelaide, this morning and a number of occupants were seen being loaded into the back of a police van.

Police were called to the house just before 2am this morning over reports of a large gathering and found about 20 people who soon became aggressive.

The officers were forced to use capsicum spray to keep the group at bay but retreated when a number of individuals started throwing bottles at them.

"To avoid injury the patrols had to abandon a police car in the street, which was subsequently damaged by the group throwing rocks and bottles at the vehicle," police said in a statement.

The vehicle was eventually retrieved, but it was extensively damaged with the front windscreen shattered by a large rock, a rear window smashed and side panels damaged.

The occupants of the home told 9News the event was a "family gathering that got out of hand" and accused police of using capsicum spray on young children who were present.
