A child under the age of two has been confirmed as the Northern Territory's latest case of coronavirus.

The toddler contracted the virus through an extended family member, who returned from overseas.

The toddler's case has been described as "mild."

"We have a situation where we now have three contacts from the same family group that have tested positive to COVID-19 in the Northern Territory," Health Minister Natasha Fyles said.

Health officials say the family have followed correct quarantine protocols, and the case is not classed as community transmission.

"We know the source of the initial COVID-19 case – these are close contacts that have transmitted the disease," Minister Fyles said.

The toddler has two siblings who attend Leanyer Primary School.

"The last day the student attended was the 25th, and it was just a half day attendance," the Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Education, Karen Weston, said.

"This family did the right thing – as soon as that close family member became symptomatic, those children did not attend school," Minister Fyles said.

"The risk to our school community is very, very low."

In a post on Facebook, Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the siblings had been tested for the disease.

"The primary school child and a younger sibling has since tested negative for coronavirus," he wrote.

A spokeswoman from Education said the school was contacting parents.

Teaching staff are eligible for COVID-19 testing in the NT.

While the final week of term 1 will be pupil free for the professional development of teachers, the Chief Minister said Leanyer Primary would "remain open," and students were still welcome to attend Leanyer Primary School, if they were not able to stay home.
