NSW cools down after sweltering weekend while NT braces for floods

Here’s the weather across Australia on Tuesday October 6, 2020, including a flood watch for the Macdonnell Ranges and Simpson Desert.

A cold front will bring temperatures down for NSW today after a brief taste of summer over the long weekend.

The front will cross the southeast is causing showers, a few storms and brisk southerly winds.

Cool southerly winds in Victoria, Tasmania, SA and southern WA are also bringing a few showers.

A slow-moving trough is generating warm winds to its north and east and rain and storms nearby, mainly in the NT and northern SA.

Moist easterly winds in eastern Queensland are causing a few showers.

THE NATIONAL FORECAST

Queensland

Mostly sunny, mild-to-warm in the southeast. Clearing shower, warm in the northeast. Sunny, very warm in the northwest. Mostly sunny, warm in the southwest.

Brisbane will be mostly sunny, with a low of 16C and top of 27C.

NSW & THE ACT

Sunny, cool-to-mild in the northeast. Rain, cool-to-cold in the southeast. Mostly cloudy, cool-to-mild in the southwest. Mostly sunny, very warm in northwest.

Sydney will be cloudy, with temperatures between 15C and 22C.

Canberra has thunderstorms clearing, with a low of 10C and top of 19C.

Yesterday was the warmest day since March in the NSW South Coast to Sydney stretch. Temperatures reached the low-to-mid 30s, 8C to 13C above average.

Sydney temperatures will hover in the low 20s today and tomorrow before warming slightly later in the week.

The chance of showers will be highest on Wednesday and Thursday.

Sydney warm weather

Victoria

Mostly sunny, cold in the southwest. Showers, cold in the southeast. Mostly sunny, cool-to-cold in the northwest. Mostly cloudy, cool-to-cold in the northeast.

Melbourne will stay cool for this time of year, with another day of temperatures in the low to mid-teens on Tuesday.

The city has a late shower on the way, with a low of 10C and top of 14C.

The Victorian capital is unlikely to warm up beyond the high teens for most of the week, with the chance of showers most days.

Tasmania

Mostly cloudy, cold in the southwest. Frost then sunny, cool in the southeast. Mostly sunny, cool-to-cold in the north.

Hobart will be mostly sunny, with a low of 5C and a top of 16C.

There's a frost warning for Midlands and Upper Derwent Valley forecast districts, with temperatures down to -1C forecast this morning.

South Australia

Mostly sunny, cold-to-very cold in the southeast and central. Mostly sunny, cool-to-cold in the west. Mostly cloudy, cool-to-cold in the north.

Adelaide has cloud increasing, with a low of 8C and top of 18C.

Western Australia

Mostly sunny, cool-to-mild in the southwest and south. Windy, cool-to-mild in the northwest. Mostly sunny, very warm in the northeast.

Perth will be mostly sunny, with a low of 8C and a top of 23C.

There's a strong wind warning for the West Kimberley Coast, Pilbara Coast East, Pilbara Coast West, Ningaloo Coast and Gascoyne Coast.

Northern Territory

Thunderstorms clearing, very warm in the NW Top End. Clearing shower, mild-to-warm in Arnhem. Showers, warm over the interior. Heavy rain, cool-to-cold in the south.

Darwin has a possible thunderstorm today, with temperatures between 25C and 33C.

There's a flood watch today for the Macdonnell Ranges and Simpson Desert.

Most parts of southern Northern Territory are very dry with very little rainfall received since March this year.

Daily totals of 15-25mm yesterday are expected to increase to 10-40mm today before easing again on Wednesday to 10-20mm.

Many roads in the flood watch area may be affected from Tuesday and become impassable. Some communities and homesteads may become isolated.
