Young children from Stewart Child Care Services have added finishing touches to a mural painted by artists at the Watchorn Street Reservoir in South Launceston.

As part of a state-wide program, TasWater is engaging with artists to paint murals on tanks, pump stations and reservoirs, especially those in places regularly viewed by locals.

Facilities Team Leader Rachaelle Downey said the South Launceston Reservoir is very close to Stewart Child Care Services, hence the invitation.

“The reservoir was identified as some infrastructure in need of some colour,” she said. “Given its proximity to the child-care centre we wanted to turn the reservoir into something that was nice for the children to look at, but also to factor that into our mural design.”

“That’s why we decided to go with this ‘ABC’ theme, to paint the alphabet along with animals and other characters associated with each letter, to assist in the children’s education and learning as well as be visually appealing. We also wanted the children at the centre to participate and help make it their own.”

Stewart Child Care Services CEO Belinda Roberts said it was great for the children at the centre to be involved.

“The children are very excited to be able to put their hand-prints on the mural,” she said. “We are looking forward to be able to see a colourful mural every day instead of a boring reservoir.”

“The mural theme will provide a fun and interactive way for children to learn the alphabet and about animals.”

Artists from across the state were involved in creating the mural and have already participated in painting many other, similar structures across Tasmania. The painting program across the state, engaging with Tasmanian artists and community groups along the way.
