Victorian police hope photographs of a grey hoodie and white trainers can help identify a man found lying on a Melbourne street last night with life-threatening head injuries.

The mystery man was rushed to hospital, after emergency services were alerted to the incident in Upwey in Melbourne's east just before 10pm.

Police are so far baffled by how the man suffered a life-threatening head injury, but they do not believe he was hit by a car or assaulted.

The white male, about 180cm tall, has three distinctive tattoos - barbed wire on his left ankle, a Chinese character on the left side of his chest and a jaguar on his right shoulder.

Police said the man wore a wedding band, and is likely aged in his 30s or 40s. He has blue eyes and light brown hair shaved on the sides.

Several images of the clothes he was wearing were released by police, including images of a grey hoodie and a pair of white runners.

Police have urged anyone who may know the man or saw anything unusual on Morris Road to contact their local station.
