A firearm was found near the bodies of mother and son Sally Anne Evans, 65, and Mark-Anthony Westney, 40, at the rear of his regional WA property.

The bodies of a mother and son have been found with a gun nearby in regional Western Australia, police say.

Their remains of Sally Evans, 65, and Mark-Anthony Westney, 40, were found at the rear of Mr Westney's property in Greenough, near Geraldton, on Sunday.

Major Crime Squad Detective Inspector Brett Ranford told reporters on Tuesday the firearm was registered to Mr Westney and police believed there was no third party involvement.

"However it is important to stress that this investigation is ongoing and we are keeping an open mind."

He called for information from the public about the pair, saying they led a reclusive lifestyle. They were reported missing on March 6 after a family member received correspondence, and were last seen in late February.

"Indications are that they had been there for several days," Det Insp Ranford said.

Mr Westney worked locally repairing and maintaining farm machinery, and neither were known to police.

A post mortem is underway and police are still trying to find out whether they had any family in WA.
