A medical screener at the Los Angeles International Airport has contracted the coronavirus, US officials have said.

The US Department of Homeland Security says it is unclear if the person contracted the virus through their work as a medical screener or from community transmission. The agency said no travellers screened at LAX have tested positive for coronavirus.

The patient last worked at the airport on February 21 and began feeling cold-like symptoms on February 29. The patient's doctor tested them for coronavirus on March 1.

Officials say the screener wore protective equipment at the airport.

Cruise ship recalled

Meanwhile, a cruise ship is being called back to San Francisco after a "small cluster" of former passengers in Northern California were confirmed to have the new virus.

That included one person who became the first person with COVID-19 to die in California.

The Grand Princess is at sea off the coast of Mexico but returning directly to San Francisco.

The ship's chief medical officer says guests who sailed on the Feb. 11-21 voyage and are currently on the ship need to stay in their rooms until they are cleared by medical staff.
