Manly Beach is one of several closed in Sydney today after social distancing rules were flouted, while in Queensland hundreds flocked to the sand on the Gold Coast, ignoring warnings from the state's premier.

Northern Beaches Council have confirmed they closed Warriewood, Manly, North Steyne Queenscliff, Freshwater, Curl Curl and Palm Beach due to crowd numbers exceeding stipulated limits.

"More beaches will close and reserves too if people don't follow the rules," the council warned in a post on social media.

"It's for the health of our community. Please us to help you."

The council has also posted a warning on their website stating that beaches remain open for exercise only, which includes "surfing, swimming, running and walking".

"Beaches will be closed due to unsafe conditions and/or mass gatherings," the warning reads.

It comes after images were posted on social media showing large congregations of people at Many Beach, in contravention of social distancing measures.

Electronic signs urging beachgoers to stay 1.5 metres apart have been erected across the Northern Beaches.

In Sydney's east, the beaches of Bondi, Coogee, Tamarama, Maroubra, Coogee and Clovelly also remain closed after images of a packed Bondi

Sydney's affluent eastern suburbs remain a hotspot for community transmission of COVID-19, with 95 confirmed cases in Bondi alone.

Meanwhile in Queensland, hundreds of people were seen gathering on a number of Gold Coast beaches today as temperatures reached 28C.

Many flocked to the coast from further inland, despite the Prime Minister's directive to stay at home unless performing an essential task.

"When you have hoards of people coming from everywhere to converge on one small beach on the Gold Coast, that is going to spoil it for the entire population," local MP David Crisafulli said.

All beaches remained open today despite the large crowds.

Police and council rangers were seen patrolling the area, but no infringement notices were issued.

It comes after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk's warning on Friday that tougher laws will be introduced if social distancing regulations aren't followed.

"Going to the beach with your mates is not on. We've seen strong action on this from New South Wales and Victoria, and our mayors will not hesitate to take similar action," she told the Today show on Friday morning.

"So, final warning everyone."
