Police are appealing for public assistance following an alleged sexual assault on a Sydney train.

A 30-year-old woman boarded a train at St Leonards station just after 8pm on January 9, when she claims she was inappropriately touched three times by a man who sat next to her.

The woman moved to a different carriage before getting off at Parramatta and contacting authorities.

Police believe the man got off at Wynyard station and changed trains before getting off at Seven Hills.

He is described as Mediterranean or Middle Eastern in appearance, aged in his 30s or 40s, with a medium build and facial hair.

The man was wearing a red shirt, jeans and a baseball cap at the time of the alleged incident.
